Curriculum

At Trinity School, we just love learning!

At Trinity School great importance is placed on
reading and developing in all of our pupils, that important life long love of reading. We use a variety of methods and resources all delivered by highly skilled and passionate members of staff. Phonics is taught daily for children in Reception to Year 3 using the “Letters and Sounds” scheme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

In all classes high priority is placed on reading with children and we aim to do so as frequently as we can, whether this be in a group or 1:1 situation. We encourage children to read with parents at home too.
We follow a set route for the order of sounds to be learned and used to blend together to make words. We also work hard to develop children’s comprehension skills and the ability to understand and enjoy what they have read.

Throughout school we operate a levelled scheme of reading for all children, which is predominantly the highly regarded Oxford Reading Tree scheme. In using this scheme, the children become familiar with the characters such as Biff, Chip and Floppy at an early age and look forward to their adventures. We encourage children to become ‘free readers’ at an age appropriate for each individual, so that they can learn to make informed reading choices and find books that they will enjoy.

In order to further promote that love of reading, we have a well stocked library that the children are able to access frequently.

We have an exciting and varied curriculum that is enhanced by talented, creative and passionate staff.

Lifelong learning is at the heart of all that we do and we aim to achieve the best for our pupils in developing skills and interests that they can keep with them for the rest of their lives!
