Year 4

In Year 4, we work super hard, learn lots, achieve our goals and have fun in the process.

History Our exciting topics beginning this September will be:The Romans, The Anglo-Saxons and Ancient Greece.

Geography We will be focusing on Europe and making links with historical invaders, settlers and their legacies.

Science We will learn about electricity, sound, solids, liquids and gasses, animal classification and food chains. We will make links to art and design technology through our learning.

Mathematics During lessons, we promote understanding of concepts, using apparatus to support the children in their learning. Learning all the times tables through regular practice at home and school is highly valued and promoted. We use the online game Rock Star Times Tables to improve recall. The children love this as they can battle with their friends and the teacher! We also focus on mental strategies and written calculations for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Being able to complete calculations enables the children to use their knowledge and skills to solve real life problems.

English We foster a love of reading through reading books whole class. Some examples of the books we read are The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis. We use the books we read to extend the children's vocabulary and develop their skills to find or work out answers to questions about what we have read. This learning feeds into developing our writing skills using techniques used by authors and emphasises the importance of applying spelling rules, punctuation and grammar.

Homework We ask all parents and carer to help their child achieve their potential by listening to them read at least three times per week and help them learn their spellings and times tables.

In addition to this, knowledge and skills in all other subjects are developed through a variety of fun and exciting teaching and learning activities.
