Such a busy week in Year Five

What an extremely busy week in Year 5! Most of the children have taken part in Bike-ability where they have learned life-long skills in safety and awareness when riding on the road, as well as really practical skills like using the gears appropriately, identifying hazards and doing simple bike checks. The children were soaked by torrential rain but this certainly didn’t dampen their spirits – a huge well done to them all!

Alongside this, we have also done some pretty amazing things inside the classroom too! The whole class are loving their book ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan! In English, the children focused on different sentence types to create an advert for a person who may have accidentally stumbled across a ‘lost thing’. They wrote their adverts using questions, commands and statements and then were able to perform them superbly with great expression and enthusiasm. They also created some of their own ‘Lost Things’ showing a flair in artistic skills as well.

As if that wasn’t enough, we have tackled perhaps one of the trickiest maths concepts of the Year 5 curriculum this week – chunking. It takes patience, perseverance, mental skills, written recording skills and EVEN MORE perseverance to get to the answer at the end. We focus on knowing that it is ok not to know certain things ‘yet’ but know that we will get there in the end and the children did just that. We had a lot of smiling and confident children by the end of just the first lesson!

The children have worked so hard and let their light’s shine so very brightly this week – we are very proud of you all! Well done and keep it up!
